At Paris Childcare, we believe that children learn best when they can explore, play, and discover the world around them. Outdoor play is an important part of our daily routine, and whenever the weather permits, we aim to spend time outside.

To help your child stay comfortable, safe, and ready for adventure, we've put together this guide on what children should wear throughout the year.

Why Appropriate Clothing Matters

Children are naturally active and curious. They love running, climbing, investigating puddles, digging in the mud kitchen, and exploring nature. Having the right clothing means they can fully participate in all activities without becoming too hot, cold, wet, or uncomfortable.

Please remember that while we do our best to keep children clean, learning through play can sometimes be messy!

Sunny and Warm Weather ☀️

When temperatures begin to rise, it's important that children are dressed in light, comfortable clothing that helps keep them cool.

We Recommend:

  • Lightweight t-shirts and shorts

  • Loose-fitting summer dresses

  • Breathable fabrics such as cotton

  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes or trainers

  • A sun hat with a wide brim or neck flap

Please Remember:

Apply long-lasting sun cream before bringing your child to nursery.

We recommend using a high-factor, long-lasting sunscreen that provides all-day protection where possible. This should be applied before arrival to ensure your child is protected from the start of the day.

Please Pack:

  • A spare set of clothes

  • Additional underwear and socks

  • Any prescribed sun cream if reapplication is required

Hot Weather (25°C+) 🌞

On particularly hot days, we take extra precautions to keep children safe and comfortable.

Ideal Clothing:

  • Light-coloured clothing

  • Loose-fitting tops and shorts

  • UV-protective hats

  • Comfortable footwear

Avoid:

  • Heavy jumpers

  • Thick leggings

  • Dark-coloured clothing

  • Flip-flops or open sandals that can cause trips

We encourage regular water drinking throughout the day and make use of shaded outdoor areas where possible.

Wet and Rainy Weather ☔

Rain doesn't always stop play!

Outdoor experiences in wet weather can be fantastic learning opportunities, helping children develop resilience, coordination, and an appreciation for nature.

We Recommend:

  • Waterproof coat

  • Waterproof trousers or puddle suit

  • Wellington boots

  • Warm layers underneath

Please Pack:

  • Spare socks

  • Spare trousers/leggings

  • Spare underwear

There's nothing worse than wet socks for the rest of the day!

Cold Weather ❄️

Children still benefit greatly from outdoor play during colder months.

Layering is Key

Layers trap warm air and allow us to adjust clothing throughout the day if children become too warm indoors.

Recommended Clothing:

  • Long-sleeved tops

  • Warm jumper or fleece

  • Coat

  • Hat

  • Gloves

  • Scarf or snood (where appropriate)

  • Warm socks

  • Waterproof footwear

Please Remember:

Every item should be clearly labelled with your child's name.

Snow and Frosty Conditions 🌨️

If snow arrives, we love making the most of it!

To keep children warm and comfortable, please send:

  • Waterproof winter coat

  • Waterproof trousers

  • Hat

  • Gloves

  • Warm boots

  • Several layers underneath

Children who are appropriately dressed can enjoy outdoor experiences for longer and stay comfortable throughout the day.

The Importance of Spare Clothes

No matter the season, accidents and messy play happen!

We kindly ask all parents to ensure their child has:

✅ At least one full change of clothes

✅ Spare underwear

✅ Spare socks

✅ Additional weather-appropriate clothing

Children are far happier when they can quickly change into clean, dry clothing after an accident or messy activity.

Footwear Matters Too

Please ensure your child wears footwear that allows them to move safely and confidently.

Best Choices:

  • Trainers

  • Well-fitting shoes

  • Weather-appropriate boots

Please Avoid:

  • Flip-flops

  • Sliders

  • High-fashion shoes that restrict movement

Children run, climb, jump, balance, and explore every day, so practical footwear is essential.

Our Final Tip

Before leaving home each morning, ask yourself:

"Can my child comfortably run, climb, sit, explore, get messy, and enjoy the weather in what they're wearing today?"

If the answer is yes, they're ready for a fantastic day of learning and fun!

Thank you for helping us ensure every child can enjoy the outdoors safely, comfortably, and confidently throughout the year.

At Paris Childcare, we believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing! 🌈🍃☀️☔❄️
